Ozone is a gas. It is made up of three oxygen atoms. It is found in the upper layer of the earth's atomosphere. This layer is called the stratosphere. It starts at around 10 km aobve earth and goes to around 50 kms above earth.
The Ozone layer prtoects the earth from the harmful effects of untraviolet rays from the sun. The effects of decreased protection from Ozone include: skin cancer, eye damage - cateracts, reduction in the growth of phytoplankton in the oceans, damage to DNA is some lifeforms, impact on crops and animals and cooling of the earth stratosphere.
Scientists have noted that the ozone layer at the South pole has begun to thin. This is because of pollutants in the atmospher which destory the oxone in the stratosphere.
